I've been silent, guys. Regular readers and tracking-spammers alike have no doubt been disappointed. Well, I have big news and a really good explanation why:
We've moved to Germany!
Fiance got a job offer in Berlin. And hey, who really wants to live in a country that's warm all year round? (You hear that sarcasm, right? I'm c-c-c-coooold... and it's not even below freezing yet!) We are excited to start this new chapter, and after 2 weeks in the country I'm very pleasantly surprised by how good my German is. I've spent 2 or 3 years learning it, now, so it should be - but putting classroom learning into practice isn't always as easy as it sounds.
I guess part of my blog's charm has been some of the "WOO! We got Western products in Accra so I'm making something special today!" But I hope that even in Germany I'll find fun things to charmingly kvetch about. It'll always be a challenge to keep up my Southwestern streak - Hatch chilis are still no more than a pipe dream. But I will have more freedom to cook what I see in all these recipes.
For example, Putenschnitzel mit Bratkartoffeln - turkey schnitzel with home fries.
Last week was Thanksgiving. We had spent the entire week looking at apartments, and I was in no condition to cook on Thursday. We had enchiladas instead. But on Friday I invited a friend over and whipped up a batch of Green Chili Mac and Cheese and a pumpkin pie. Then, with just a few days' delay, on Monday I made turkey. (Schnitzel. As mentioned.)
I didn't take any pictures of this year's pumpkin pie, but the recipe was exactly the same as last year's and I never did post a recipe for that one. These are my next two promises: turkey and pumpkin pie.
Even in a new country, the kitchen can always smell like home when there's pumpkin pie in the oven.
